Man sentenced for interfering with a vehicle in Dunmurry

A Belfast man has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to interfering with a vehicle, obstructing the police, and disorderly behaviour.

Jordan O’Kane, 22, whose address was given as Riverdale Park North in Belfast, appeared before Lisburn Magistrates Court on Thursday, April 25.

The court heard that on January 16, 2024, police received a report of two males attempting to gain entry to a vehicle on the Glenburn Road in Dunmurry.

One of the males ran off, however police apprehended the second male, the defendant, who initially gave false details to the police and began to shout aggressively at the police.

The defendant was conveyed to Musgrave Custody Suite where he made no comment during interview.

Defence told the court the defendant had “struggled with his domestic situation and mental health” but that he was now back living with his mother again.

He continued: “He apologises in respect of these matters. He is hopeful he won’t be back before the court again.”

During sentencing, District Judge Rosie Watters addressed the defendant, saying: “I take it you don’t want to go back into custody again?”

On the charges of obstructing the police and disorderly behaviour, Ms Watters imposed a custodial sentence of five months, suspended for 18 months.

On the charge of interference with a vehicle, Ms Watters imposed a custodial sentence of two months, suspended for 18 months.

The district judge told the defendant: “I am imposing it on the basis you are going to make every effort to say out of trouble in the future.”
